History as an overlapping process. The international competition "Ponte Parodi and the city of Genoa" advertised by the "Ancient Port of Genoa" Body, was called for restoring 23,000 square metres on the seafront of a former industrial area, Ponte Parodi.

By using the strategic position of this pier in the system of the Ancient Port, it wished to redesign the face of Genoa as an international level tourist destination; moreover it foresaw the creation of infrastructures, car parks, services and multi-use spaces.

Giancarlo De Carlo's study is in the finals together with, among others, the Foreign Office Architects, OMA of Rem Koolhaas associated with the studio of Stefano Boeri, and the winner UN Studio of Ben van Berkel and Caroline Bos.

The fulcrum of the new structure, as designed by De Carlo, is a series of spaces, for exhibitions and commercial purposes, that are literally grafted, at different heights, along the spine formed of the pre-existing silos on the pier. These structures, enclosed in large glass surfaces, are joined by the urban type facilities (restaurant, gyms, swimming pools, coffee shops, pubs, disco …) which achieve a more immediate connection with the city and the nearby universities. The complex ends on two opposing sides with two squares that contribute to confirming its urban role. From an architectural viewpoint, the choice of the partial maintenance of the structure of the silos defines the image of the building, offering the cue for creating characterized exhibition and connecting spaces. Among the participants, De Carlo’s approach is unique. The project shows his particular regard for historical landscape, for him made of stratifications, cannibalizations and accumulated memories; of ancient but also recent stories, such as those of the silos that characterize the skyline of the port. He does not work through conceptual simplifications that can produce a monolithic or abstract building-landscape. Rather, he reproduces the stratifications, the joint that characterizes the historical cycle that accompanies the formation of the city with its spatial complexities.
