City and territory were closely connected and the walls that surrounded and
protected the city, clearly defined its limits. The route followed the flow of the site seeking the widest view across the territory. In the past, the walls if grandiose and impressive, managed to discourage the assaults of enemies through sheer resistance and symbolic power. Today, the walls recount the history of the city and are a monument to be protected; they are also an extraordinary observatory between city and territory. In the southern section, the continuity of the wall - still well preserved and showing almost no signs new construction – keep the ancient relationship between city and territory intact. Crossing them has a very different meaning today than in the past, and yet it is still a strong transition between artifice and nature, between a compressed and layered place - the city - and the natural landscape.
