The building named Decapaggio (because it was used for “pickling” iron) was built when the Falck steelworks were still the Attilio Franco cast iron foundries. It was built in two stages by adding to the principal body - the office block built on two levels - the two single-story lateral blocks intended mainly to contain the workers’ canteen and workshops.

The semicircular form, a distinctive trait of the building, derives from the course of Via Trento, along which it is aligned.  It was distinguished from the buildings of the large industrial complex by its small scale and marked stylistic features.  This concern for the treatment of the detail corresponds to an idea of ornament which distinguished numerous industrial buildings in the past.  The symbolic value and architectural quality of the building today constitute a memory which it was decided to maintain and enhance by redeveloping the volume with a new function.

The City Council and the new companies which own the building sites have agreed on the conversion of the complex and its use as housing for young couples in the City of Sesto San Giovanni.

The project is based on this decision and makes it a prerequisite to safeguard the front on Via Trento which, given the extensive transformations planned on these sites in the near future should safeguard the memory of the glorious years of Sesto’s iron and steel industry.

The preservation of the elevation on Via Trento is backed up in the project by a new image on the opposite side, which in a certain sense states how the new activities can be revitalized and transform the building.

Different typologies, chosen to correspond more closely to the three portions of the building, allow for a variety of apartments. The majority will have private gardens and a duplex typology. The study of the typologies gave due consideration to the modes of access and the different degrees of privacy in the public space.

L’edificio denominato Decapaggio, costruito quando le acciaierie Falck si chiamavano Fonderie di ghisa di Attilio Franco, fu realizzato in due fasi aggregando al corpo principale - la palazzina per uffici costruita su due livelli - i due  corpi laterali ad un unico livello destinati principalmente alla mensa degli operai e alle officine.

La forma semicircolare,  tratto peculiare di questo edificio, deriva dall’andamento  della Via Trento lungo la quale l’edificio si dispone. Si distingueva dagli edifici del grande complesso industriale per la scala minuta e i marcati caratteri stilistici. Questa cura nel trattamento del dettaglio corrisponde ad un’idea di decoro ha caratterizzato in passato molti edifici industriali. Il valore simbolico e la qualità architettonica dell’edificio rappresentano oggi una memoria che si è deciso di mantenere e valorizzare recuperando il volume rifunzionalizzato.

L’Amministrazione Comunale e le nuove Società proprietarie delle aree hanno concordato la trasformazione del complesso edilizio e la sua destinazione a  residenze per giovani coppie del Comune di Sesto San Giovanni.

Il progetto muove da questa scelta e stabilisce come presupposto la salvaguardia del fronte sulla Via Trento che, considerando le grandi trasformazioni che si prevedono su queste aree nel prossimo futuro dovranno salvaguardare la memoria degli anni gloriosi dell’industria siderurgica di Sesto.

Alla salvaguardia del  fronte su Via Trento il progetto affianca una nuova immagine sul lato opposto che in qualche modo dichiara come le  nuove attività possano rivitalizzare  e trasformare l’edificio.

Diverse tipologie, selezionate per meglio corrispondere alle tre porzioni dell’edificio consentono una varietà di appartamenti di cui la gran parte sono caratterizzati da giardini privati e tipologia duplex  Nello studio delle tipologie si sono tenute in considerazione le modalità di accesso e i differenti gradi di privatezza nello spazio pubblico.
